Anything is easy…

once you know how

Sometimes, all we need is a little help on our path to greatness.

Communication is Always a Two Way Street

When your student speaks, I listen. Open Horizons Tutoring is dedicated to helping your student succeed. From Algebra to Calculus, as well as SAT/ACT prep, I approach each student’s needs as a unique opportunity to present coursework in a light that makes sense to them. Many students have difficulty in a traditional classroom setting. Personal tutoring can be tailored to your student’s particular learning styles and help them develop the skills they need to be successful on their own.

“I wanted to move ahead in math over the summer, but I knew Algebra 1 was a behemoth subject to tackle. I wasn’t sure it was feasible. Then we found Jon. With a huge master plan and an even more huge smile on his face, we finished all of Algebra 1 in 45 days. He gave me test taking tips and tons of support. Jon taught me math concepts I never thought I could grasp and we had a good time doing it. I looked forward to our sessions like I look forward to seeing a friend. Jon is amazing in every way.”

— Loki D, age 13

“Jon tutored me in mathematics and science for 5 years, beginning in middle school and then all throughout high school. From homework assignments to studying for AP exams and the SAT, Jon helped me through it all. He never skipped a beat with his preparation every time we met, clearly laying out what we were going to focus on for the day and how that played in to the larger picture of midterms and finals. Jon constantly made sure I understood the fundamentals and the “why” behind each problem and new learnings. If I could sum Jon up in one word (outside of his obvious brilliance and positive attitude), it’s his patience. I never felt rushed, pressured or frustrated with my pace of progress, which in retrospect is a crucial attribute for a tutor. It still amazes me how much he knows. I’ll never forget when I went to college and worked with another tutor...it just wasn’t the same!”

— Booie Grant, tutored from grades 8 - 12, Graduated from Columbia University.

“I have known Jon Wilcox for over 10 years. He served as a math tutor for my youngest son during high school, and was very effective in this role. Jon is respectful of his students, uniformly kind, patient, and he excels at making a connection with young people. I can whole-heartedly recommend Jon as a tutor.”

— Reuben Weininger, M.D.

“I really love that when I work with Jon it is so much easier than working in a class, because with Jon I get all of the help and attention I need. I don't really like math, but when I work with him, he makes it really fun because he makes all of these games, and jokes about what you are learning. I appreciate Jon's help with my math skills.”

— Jordan, age 12

“Jon understands my daughter's brain and how she learns. His enthusiasm and fun work style made even Zoom meetings productive. Jordan often runs to me after a session to excitedly share what 'lightbulb' she had with Jon. My main goal has been achieved, to see her confidence soar and her fears fade away!”

“Wilcox is an amazing tutor.  Before his help I was failing math and probably not going to pass the semester, but after his help I got the highest grade on the final and I got the highest math grade that I have ever gotten.  His teaching methods are super helpful, because he can relate to the subjects that are super tough and he uses really helpful techniques and skills to teach.  The overall experience of having Wilcox as a tutor wasn’t just a tutor but also like gaining a friend.  He is super nice and truly cares about the kids that he tutors.”

— Jacob T.

“Our son was struggling with his high school Trigonometry class and was close to failing when we first contacted Wilcox. From the first visit we were impressed with his easy teaching style and his interest in our son's success. He was always well prepared for every session and by the end of the semester, we saw a huge turn around in study habits and comprehension. Our son also passed his class with one of the highest scores on the final exam. We highly recommend Wilcox as a tutor.”
